Title of Event: The Ellisons Present Kephart's Smoky Mountain Magic
When: Friday, November 20, 2009 7:00 PM Location: Malaprop's Description: Local historian George Ellison and his wife, watercolorist Elizabeth Ellison, will present Horace Kephart’s “lost” novel Smoky Mountain Magic, now in print for the first time 80 years after its completion. Kephart is the author of several classic regional books, including Our Southern Highlanders and Camping and Woodcraft. He, along with friend George Masa, was instrumental in establishing Great Smoky Mountains National Park. George Ellison, who wrote the introduction for the book, is Kephart's leading biographer and Elizabeth Ellison painted the watercolor for the book's cover.
"...that mysterious beckoning hinterland which rose right back of my
chimney and spread upward, outward, almost to three cardinal points of
the compass, mile after mile, hour after hour of lusty climbing—an
Eden still unpeopled and unspoiled."
--Horace Kephart

The Raven and the Monkey's Paw: Classics of Horror and Suspense from the Modern Library
by
Poe, Edgar Allan,
Modern Library
This is a timeless collection of tales and poems to scare the wits out of you. The beauty of these stories and poems lies in their readability: ideal for sharing aloud around the campfire or for a quick, thrilling dip . . . under the covers with a flashlight. The writing itself sends as many awe-inspired shivers down the spine as do the ghosts and goblins on these pages. Stories include classics by Edgar Allan Poe, Edith Wharton, and Dickens.
Unique and provocative selections from a great diversity of voices...all personally recommended by the independent booksellers of America.

In this book, which is full of observations and maps, we see the world through the eyes of a Cheerio-obsessed twelve-year-old with the wisdom of an old soul. It is funny, tender, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and full of insight. On every page there was something that I wanted to read aloud to anyone who would listen.--Jake Hallman, A Great Good Place for Books (Oakland, CA)
Quote of the Day
"The crime of book purging is that it involves a rejection of the word. For the word is never absolute truth, but only man's frail and human effort to approach the
truth. To reject the word is to reject the human search."
